Interior Design in North Kolkata:
Revamping the 110-year-Old Bose Family’s House

There’s a beautiful thing about old houses. They tell you stories! Every corner there comes with a unique fragrance reminding of the days it has come across!

Someone has rightly said, “ Old houses are full with memories, and that’s why they resist to collapse.”

The Bose family’s 110-year-old house in North Kolkata goes well with these words. The house is located beside the Tala tank near RG Kar Hospital, a notable place in northern Kolkata.

The interior design story of this house is very interesting. MDD Home Interiors, by God’s grace, has completed numerous interior design and renovation projects. But, I must admit, it was different.

Let’s see what Mr. Dev Ganguly, the CEO and Founder of MDD Home Interiors, says about it. The article further will continue with his words.

Renovating this age-old house was a real challenge. On the one hand, due to old age and lack of proper maintenance, the living standard inside the home was poor. But, on the contrary, the structure is stronger than any modern home.

So, we witnessed an exciting journey while renovating the house. This project of interior design in North Kolkata was a memorable one.

Anyways, the introduction to the house was weird. It welcomed us with a foul smell on the very first day we went there for this interior design project. Also, damps and wet moss were here and there on the walls, ceiling, and floor corners.

So, our task was not limited to only designing the indoors. We had to do civil construction, renovation, interior design, and other similar tasks. However, one thing is here to note.

The signs of dampness, mold, moss, etc., were there mostly due to the lack of maintenance. The inner structure of the house is in quite a good condition. With 24-inch durable walls and other architectural finesse, the house can stand still even when today’s newly built houses give up.

About the Owner

The owner of the house is Mr. Dhrubojyoti Bose. He is an event manager by profession. With his creative ideas, he suggested many things that we incorporated into the interior design style. The overall design theme was purely traditional, classic vintage.

Simply put, the old house look was supposed to be maintained. At the same time, we had to make the house presentable as per current trends, with state-of-the-art conveniences.

We accepted the challenge and began our work.

Bedroom- A Room to Relax

The image portrays how we decked up the bedroom with traditional wallpaper. Leaving some space for hanging photo frames, we added a well-designed wall panel. A half-round shape is cut on the panel to incorporate a unique touch. We also placed a simple side table with four drawers beside the bed. Overall, the space becomes functional and attractive.

You might have a whirling feeling while looking at the image.😀 It is taken from a different angle to highlight the overall ceiling of the room and the wardrobe. The wall-to-wall wardrobe is the main attraction of the bedroom. Its contrasting colours look amazing. We illuminated the room with some traditional and modern lights.

The bedroom designs don’t end with only the ceiling, wardrobe and side wall panels. The bed with a light-shaded wooden texture also contributes to the traditional aura of the room.

The dark-coloured panel contrasts well with the three Alcove boxes. We added focus light to illuminate the boxes. The light-weight curtains, spotlight near windows, and other elements make the room exceptionally beautiful.

Another bedroom is showcased here. We have used another style of wallpaper near the bed. It adds a spiral look to the wall. The borders radiate a beautiful glow with gleaming lights. The whole room also looks elegant, with a simple wooden texture and a soothing ambience.

Let’s Dine In!

The dining space is an area to cherish family life at its best. Whether it’s a homely candlelight dinner date or a family get-together, you can enjoy every dining occasion here. Hence, we decided to highlight the space with a gentle yet exquisite design.

Your dining area should please everyone, from family members to esteemed guests. In Bose Family’s house as well, we kept it in mind. So, besides maintaining the vintage look of the house, we added some modern details to the dining area’s interior. You can see the beautiful round-shaped designs, well-lit with white lights. With a minimal dining table set, the unique design radiates an amazing vibe.

If you were unsatisfied with that small glimpse of the dining area wall, here’s more for you. You can see the full wall with illuminated rounds. The glass table in front of it adds a fine touch to the place.

Living Room Area- Gossips, La Liga matches, and More!

This project of interior design in North Kolkata was indeed an interesting task. If the dining area is attractive with well-lit round designs, the living area is no less than that. Let’s see what magic this place has to show you!

Tv Unit | MDD Home Interiors | Dev Ganguly

The black-and-white theme looks prominent here. While the TV unit is black, half of the wall is white. Black panels and interesting box designs make the walls appealing. Black and white seats align with the whole room’s ambience here perfectly.

We used various lights strategically here to highlight multiple areas. Simple chandelier lights, small spotlights, and others are on the list.

It is a complete view of the living room area in the house. From black and white seating arrangements to light set-ups- you can see every aspect of the room in this image.

You can see the spotlights in this image. Look at the exquisite black panels on the wall decorated with multiple focus lights! Doesn’t it look enticing?

TV Unit- An Instance of Classic & Contemporary Design

Set up the TV in its place and relax! Is the TV unit only for this purpose? Certainly Not! When every corner of the home is getting adorned, why should we leave the TV unit untouched? So, we planned something unique for this section too.

Let’s see what we did.

Bedroom TV Unit

You can see the complete TV unit in a bedroom in this image. It is an amazing set-up with luminous designs. The unique oval-shaped decor adds classic beauty to the area. We were planning to combine a classic and contemporary look here. And this is how it’s done. Also, we have added some more storage by placing three drawers.

TV, along with its other accessories in the living room, is visible here. The area comes with enough storage space to ensure a functional and attractive look.

This is another innovative design idea we incorporated near the TV unit in the living room. A passage full of stones is covered with glass panels. We installed lights inside the panel as well. Doesn’t the design make the place look exclusive?

We always ensure beauty and functionality for most areas inside a house. Bose Family’s house was also no different. So, we used multiple drawers to make the TV unit more functional. Have a look at the contrasting black and white drawers! Simple and beautiful they are!

Walk Step by Step!

After roaming around the bedroom, living room, and other areas, let’s move toward the staircases. Usually, renovation of such areas is limited to styling the staircases. But we did something different here.

Wall Art | MDD Home Interiors | Dev Ganguly

Stone tiles have enhanced the beauty of the staircase area more. We placed framed artwork here. Mr. Dhrubojyoti Bose is a person with sophisticated, fine taste. So, aligning with his taste and choice, we ordered these aesthetic decor pieces from Babu Pal. He is a talented artist, we must say. He often provides MDD Home Interiors with exceptional creative pieces which make our designs more special.

You could see the artwork placed on the walls in the previous image. In this image, you can see how we have highlighted them with spotlights. With these lights, the whole staircase area looks mystic and mesmerising.

Bathroom Space- Simple, Classic, and White

Every design goes useless if the house’s bathroom is not good enough. By good, we don’t mean lavish set-up and expensive appliances. It must be safe, comfortable, and clean. So, while redesigning the bathroom spaces in Bose family’s house, we implemented this idea.

Bathroom | MDD Home Interiors | Dev Ganguly

The bathroom is smaller than many other bathrooms you usually see. The size is around 3×4 feet. We tried to design every essential thing within the small space. The bathroom includes a simple basin in the corner. A standalone WC is attached to the wall. We used light-coloured tiles here.

We used wooden-textured tiles here, in this bathroom. The bathroom is also small. However, it is a little larger than the previous bathroom.

Last but Not Least

That’s how Mr. Dev Ganguly, the renowned residential interior designer in Kolkata, decked up the whole house of Mr. Bose. Mr. Dev touched up every corner of the house, from the bedroom, living room area, etc., to the staircases and bathroom. This instance of interior design in North Kolkata must have left you in awe.

Would you like to revamp your old house too? Good News for you! Mr. Dev Ganguly and the whole team of MDD Home Interiors are ready for it. Let’s connect with them today.
